Pets

That warm fuzzy feeling at your side is likely the family’s least demanding member.  The family pet is a companion and a reliable confident to many people that visit our store. Many of our customers are happy to bring their well mannered friend to the store  and we are happy to have the four legged customers visit.

Lakelands Hardware and Outdoors has a selection of pet products and we are adding more as our customers suggest.  Presently we have dry dog food, collars and general pet care supplies.

Our dry dog food is high quality and when the recent dog food recall came down we were not affected. We have Good Dog and Defender brands.

Flea and tick prevention is on the mind of all pet owners and they have several options available.  We have once a month treatments and flea powders.  While many people have treated the pet, they often forget to treat the yard.  We would suggest a granular insect treatment spread over the yard as this will control ticks, fleas, and ants.  One application can control these bothersome insects for months. This is good for the entire family.

Every pet needs play time and we try to keep a variety of toys.  You must have the right sized toy for the pet in mind.  Small toy, big dog equals big problems.   Pet parents can be surprised to see the xray of a new toy in the pets stomach.

After some poor initial collars from other manufacturers, we decided to upgrade our dog collars to the Weaver  brand.   Many of our horse lovers will likely know the name as they have been making high quality horse bridles and tack for over a hundred years.  These collars are made of quality bridle leather and no fade nylon.  Buckles are made of durable nickel, brass or stainless steel.

One of our newest products is the invisible  pet fence that does not require underground cable.  That is correct - no under ground cable!  It operates on a radio signal that allows your pet a radius of 90 feet(25,000 square feet) at its max and freedom to roam in the home and outside.

It can be adjusted to smaller radius to accommodate the smaller yard as well.  We set ours up in under thirty minutes and training our 4 year old  miniature dachshund took less than a day. Our dog had become quite the escape artist and no patching and blocking of her exit points would work. Set up is very simple in that you plug the base in and then walk the perimeter with the collar in hand and not on the dog.   Flag the perimeter when you hear the collar beep.  We set our flags about 4 feet apart.  Then go to your dog and attach the collar.  Bring the dog close to the perimeter and have a helper stand outside the perimeter with a treat then allow the dog to breach the border.  We found that using a leash let us bring the former “fugitive” back to us quickly and then reassure her.  Our initial training was only possible at 3 locations before she was a little unnerved.  She did yelp when the minor shock came and again a few days later  when she forgot the border but returned quickly.

People that take their dogs camping in motor-homes will find that they can take the radio base with them and set up a perimeter in a camp ground and not have to tie their dog up outside. When you and your dog are ready to go for a walk, take the collar off and use a normal collar.
